Professor Tim Burt retires as Master of Hatfield College, Durham University, on 31 August 2017 after 21 years at the College. During his time as Master, Tim has seen a significant increase in full-time and part-time postgraduates students – from 8 to over 400! – as well as an extensive programme of building refurbishment. Besides having been head of the University’s Colleges’ Division for a period, Tim has also been Professor of Geography and chair of the University’s Environmental Team, heading up the University’s environmental plans, policies, and procedures. Along with Martin Evans, Tim is the co-founder of the Collegiate Way International movement that unites university colleges around the world. Retirement events in the College have included a packed Senior Common Room dinner, an alumni farewell dinner, an evening celebrating Tim’s contribution to the College and the wider University, and a Garden Party with a BarBQ. We wish Tim, and his wife Elizabeth, a long and happy retirement.
